CLARE DOHERTY
I wonder whether I am a graphic designer or fine artist, or whether
it matters. I am fully-equipped to be a graphic designer, in any case.
My recent work has been about "personal patterns" -
selecting images from personal
photos and transforming them into repetitive patterns.
Some of the images are immediately readable,
others become more abstract patterns which
are harder to decipher.
I enjoy the process
I work by, and the different stages of the transformation of
ordinary family snapshots into generic imagery - from the
selecting of images among the hundreds of filed-away photos,
via the "purification" of the image on the computer, to the
silk screening of the pattern onto different surfaces and
backgrounds.
As for my professional experience as a designer/artist, I have
had my work exhibited in 1995 in Quito, Ecuador.
I have participated in group exhibitions at Camberwell.
In 1995, I did an internship in the graphics department of the
Economist magazine.
I am currently looking for design work of a part-time, freelance nature.
