I have been hoarding animals and insects for a while
now and have only recently become interested in livestock.
Spending a lot of time frequenting pet shops,
'tropical houses' and aquariums, I will never cease
to be amazed at the lack of imagination used in the display of nature.
In these developments animals are wrenched from their natural context
and placed within these sterile but promiscuous environments where
pussy cats can be found squashed inbetween Frill-Necked Water Dragons
and Imperial African Scorpions.
I have been developing ideas on the
subject of display within entomological collections, trying to
break the stale, traditional forms that have always been used.
On other research missions I could not fail to notice that
the graphics in these establishments are usually bits of
dog eared card stuck on to the side. The seed was sown for
my grande finale: I wanted to produce some form of
information graphics which would be far
more integrated within the design of the existing 'vessels'.
Something that would work across the board -
in the commercial world, possibly within architecture
and in the comfort of your own home!
I am currently producing a triptych: a series tanks with
sandblasted facades which compliment and reflect the livestock within.
One design will be purely information graphics, another typographical
and the final, more abstracted. The lighting within the tanks will
illuminate the sandblasted text and illustrations and throw all the
detail onto the surrounding walls: a trip to the light fantastic!
Although the subject matter is close to my heart I work in many other
forms too: costume, vacuum forming and multi media. I am confident on
the Mac and can use Photoshop, Quark, Director and word processing
packages.
Ideally I would like to collaborate with professionals from diverse fields,
from theatre designers and architects to ecologists and musicians.
